FAQs

Does brass jewelry tarnish? (also called oxidize)

Yes. Brass is either alloy or zinc and copper, which will naturally tarnish when exposed to oxygen. Water, moisture, and even oils from your skin will also accelerate tarnishing. With proper care, your brass jewelry can last decades.

Can brass turn your skin green?

Yes it can, but with proper care you can avoid that. Brass is usually made of a combination of zinc and copper, it can often tarnish or oxidize which in return can turn your skin green. If this happens please follow the instructions for brass jewelry care. I have the instructions posted in the FAQ section, as well as under every brass item posting, and I will also provide you with a print out in your order.

Can you shower/bathe/swim with brass or gold-plated jewelry?

No. To increase the longevity of your jewelry, I recommend that you avoid wearing any brass or gold-plated jewelry in the shower/bath/pool. Brass loses its zinc component quickly when exposed to water, causing the metal to weaken. Bathrooms are a humid environment that can cause brass to tarnish.

Brass Care Instructions:

  • I recommend keeping brass jewelry away from wet, humid places such as bathrooms. A great, safe place would be in a jewelry box, jewelry hanging display, or tucked inside a jewelry pouch.
  • Take care to prevent scratches.
  • To increase the longevity of your jewelry, I recommend that you avoid wearing any brass or gold-plated jewelry in the shower/bath/pool.
  • Use a soft washcloth with warm water and a mild soap and gently wipe away grime. Rinse and dry. Thoroughly dry.
  • You can also find brass tarnish cleaner and polish. Follow product instructions.
  • A combination of baking soda and vinegar is a great option to clean brass, as the acetic acid in the vinegar and the sodium in the baking soda work together to dissolve the tarnish.

Wood/Resin Care Instructions:

  • Store wood jewelry in an air-tight bag to avoid dust and moisture. Use a non-abrasive microfiber cloth to wipe down the surface of your wood jewelry to avoid dust and dirt buildup.
  • Treated wood will have a glossed over, smooth finish. It will be ok if temporarily exposed to water and moisture, but I would avoid that if possible.
  • Untreated wood will expand when wet or exposed to moisture. This can cause the wood to become dry and crack.
